PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
A graphics format designed to be the successor to GIF.
PNG features lossless compression, transparency, progressive loading, freedom from patent restrictions, and it handles millions of colors (unlike the severe limitations of GIF).
The main problem is that since older browsers don’t support it, Web designers are hesitant to use it, so GIF remains more popular.
