InterNIC
An organization created by the National Science Foundation to provide Internet information and domain name registration services.
Originally started as a joint effort between Network Solutions and AT&T, InterNIC is now run by ICANN. InterNIC (Internet Network Information Center) still monitors domain names and provides whois data, but the domain name registration process has now done by commercial domain registrars such as Verisign.
