Affordance
A visual clue derived from an everyday object which Web site designers take advantage of when creating Web pages.
The most common examples are buttons and dials found on electronic devices whose appearance and functionality are mimicked on a Web page and which most users can relate to naturally.
Real world metaphors, however, shouldn’t be used if they are difficult to interpret or if they don’t lend themselves to the confines of a Web page.
